Electrical
Electrical fault finding in Brisbane
Fault finding is the diagnostic work that comes before a repair. Something on the installation is not behaving, and the job is to isolate which circuit, which section and which component is responsible before anything gets replaced.

That order matters. Swapping parts until the symptom disappears is expensive and often leaves the actual fault in place. Hoff traces the cause first, tells you what he found, then prices the fix.
What it covers
What's included.
Symptom and history
What is happening, when it started, what changed around then, and which parts of the property are affected.
Circuit isolation
Narrowing the fault to a specific circuit by systematic testing rather than guesswork.
Testing at the board and the point
Measurements taken at the board and at the fittings to separate a supply problem from an appliance problem.
Nuisance tripping diagnosis
Working out whether a tripping RCD is a genuine earth fault, an accumulation of small leakage, or a failing appliance.
A plain explanation
What the fault is, what caused it, and what it will take to correct. In plain words, before you commit.
Repair and retest
Once agreed, the repair is carried out and the circuit is tested and certified.
Why people call
Common reasons for this job.
- A safety switch trips as soon as it is reset, or trips at random
- Powerpoints or lights in one part of the house are dead
- Lights flicker or dim when an appliance starts
- A circuit only fails in wet weather
- There is a burning smell or a warm switch plate
- Something stopped working after a storm
Worth acting on
Signs something is wrong.
- A burning or fishy smell near a switch, outlet or the board
- Discoloured, melted or warm-to-touch outlets and switch plates
- Sparking when a plug is inserted or removed
- Buzzing from a fitting, a switch or the switchboard
- A shock or tingle from an appliance, a tap or a metal fixture
How Hoff works
The approach.
Hoff starts with what you can tell him, because the pattern usually narrows the search. A fault that only appears in rain points somewhere very different to one that appears when the kettle goes on.
From there it is systematic: isolate the circuit, test, divide the circuit, test again, until the fault is located rather than assumed. Some faults are found in twenty minutes and some are genuinely stubborn, and you will be told which one you have.
Nothing gets replaced on a hunch. If the diagnosis points at an appliance rather than the wiring, that is what you will be told, even though it means a smaller job.
If there is immediate danger such as smoke, sparking, a burning smell or exposed live equipment, turn the power off at the main switch if it is safe to do so and call 000. Do not attempt to repair damaged electrical equipment yourself. Hoff works weekday hours and is not a 24-hour emergency service.
Suitable for
Where this comes up.
Fault finding questions.
A tripping RCD normally means it is doing its job and there is a genuine leakage to earth somewhere on that circuit. It can be a failing appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or a damaged cable. The cause has to be traced rather than the switch replaced.
Fault finding is diagnostic, so the time it takes varies with how the fault behaves. Hoff will explain how he charges for the diagnosis before starting, and the repair itself is quoted once the cause is known.
Often it is the appliance. The diagnosis separates the two, and if it turns out to be a faulty appliance rather than the installation you will be told that plainly.
No. Hoff works Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm, and is not a 24-hour emergency service. For a safe but urgent fault, call and he will fit you in as soon as he can. If there is danger right now, call 000.
Yes. Any circuit worked on is tested on completion and the required Certificate of Testing and Compliance is issued.
Send Hoff the fault finding details.
Describe the job in plain words and Hoff will come back to you personally with a written price.
