When does a switchboard need upgrading?

Short answer

A switchboard needs upgrading when it can no longer protect the installation or the people using it. In practice that means one of five things: it still has ceramic rewireable fuses, it has no safety switches, it trips repeatedly under normal load, it has no room left for new circuits, or it shows signs of heat damage. Age on its own is not a reason. A sound older board that still protects properly can stay.

1. It still has ceramic fuses

Rewireable ceramic fuses were standard in Australian homes for decades. They work by melting a wire when current gets too high, and they have to be rewired by hand afterwards.

The problem is not that they fail. It is that they offer no protection against electric shock, they are slow compared with a modern breaker, and rewiring one with the wrong gauge wire quietly removes the protection altogether.

2. There are no safety switches

A safety switch, or RCD, compares current flowing out against current returning. When electricity finds another path, such as through a person, it cuts supply in a fraction of a second.

Circuit breakers do not do this job. Plenty of boards have modern-looking breakers and no RCD anywhere. If there are no test buttons on the board, there is no shock protection.

3. It trips regularly under normal load

Occasional tripping usually points at a specific fault or appliance. Regular tripping when the household does ordinary things generally means the circuits are carrying more than they were designed for.

This is common in homes that have been extended, or where a kitchen has been renovated and several high-draw appliances now share a circuit intended for far less.

4. There is no spare capacity

Adding air-conditioning, an induction cooktop, an EV charger or a new circuit for an extension all require somewhere to land at the board.

A full enclosure does not automatically mean a full replacement. Sometimes rearranging or using combined RCBO devices frees enough space, and it is worth asking whether that option exists before committing to a full upgrade.

5. There are signs of heat damage

Discolouration, scorch marks, a smell of hot plastic, or buzzing and crackling from inside the enclosure all indicate a connection generating heat.

This is the one item on the list to treat as urgent rather than planned maintenance. If there is a burning smell or visible scorching, turn the power off at the main switch if it is safe to do so and call an electrician. If there is smoke or sparking, call 000.

What an upgrade actually involves

The existing board is assessed first, including the incoming supply and the condition of the cabling behind it. A quote follows once the scope is known.

On the day, supply is isolated for part of the work, the new enclosure and protective devices are installed, circuits are identified and labelled, and the installation is tested. In Queensland you receive a Certificate of Testing and Compliance on completion.
